Cannot associate Poken device with account
I have a Poken key fob and I have registered a new account. Everything is all set up except for the fact that I have no Poken device associated with my account. How do I associate my Poken device sitting in front of me with my account?
-
Hi Charles
Sorry for the late response! You can find the answer as to how to link your Poken device with your account in our FAQ:
http://www.doyoupoken.com/PokenWeb/co...
Hope this solves it! -

Thanks for the response Simone!
I already did the sign up process but it never associated a device with my account I registered. How do I associate my device with the account I created?
-Charles-
You need to plug in the token in your PC. It opens a new disk device with an html file on it. Open it in your web browser. It will redirect you to the poken web site with enough info that the web site introduces you to the new device.
I had to do it twice. I logged out from poken in between.

Unable to get the device to be recognized on the device page however it is showing green and I get told that it syncs. As such I have no idea if the poken is sync'd or not. I've tried logging off and back on... unplugging and re-plugging it in and all sorts. I'm about ready to just give up and use business cards instead. It's the most frustrating little device I've ever come across to date!

I’m
trying to reproduce
Hi Tim,
I just created a new account (w/o a Poken), grabbed a fresh Poken, inserted it into the USB and while in the Account clicked the "Detect" button. The Poken was associated to the account.
Is there a specific scenario that isn't working? Just want to make sure I understand what needs to be fixed.
Cheers,

Also here in Japan we are experiencing this problem quite often, actually.
We shipped a batch of bad pokens to Lausanne. Marco has them on his desk.
Peter-
Let me correct one thing: I meant "bunch" rather than "batch". These 40 or so pokens all belong to different production batches.
Will try to be more accurate/careful when posting next time.

Steve, sorry for not responding earlier. We just replaced that Poken for the client because that was the only timely solution. We will try to see if we can get more info to help reproducing the problem.

Hi Tim, Peter,
Just checking if you have been able to track down some more hints that might point us in the right direction?
We still werent able to reproduce exactly. -
-
Hi Simone,
Thanks for the follow up!
Did Marco have a chance to check the devices which we shipped back?
Some of these are marked so it should be easy to pick them out.
Also, we have noticed at several occasions now that a poken starts "acting up" after you replace the battery. Does it somehow go into a reset-mode from which it fails to recover?

Hi!
Not really responding to Charles' problem so much as saying I'm having the same one. I purchased a poken device yesterday. When I came home I plugged it into my computer. I run on Windows Vista. I went to the poken website and set up my account, and read the intsructions there on how to set up & sync the device.
The device does not bring up a new device device and html; instead it takes me directly to one of my web browsers. I have tried the "run install_poken, and I have tried to start from the "my computer" files, no joy. I'd really like to use this today to link up with old friends & new people at the convention, can you help?-
This is actually expected, the poken will open a web browser and go to a web site. Where you can eighter see your account or can associate it with your account. If this does not work correctly (i.e. opening empty browser) this might be a problem with your html association on your machine.

Hi, Bernd!
I went back to the convention today & bought a 2nd poken. I spoke to the vendor and we synced my original poken to my account on his computer just fine. He suggested that perhaps my system is thinking it's a pop-up, and that I should disable my pop-up blocker.
Came home tonight and found that my pop-up blocker was already disabled, so that's not it. And now I'm having the same problem with the new one - it takes me to a web browser.
Also I tried "detect" on both pokens - it just spins its little timer dial. In fact, it's been spinning for about an hour now.
Could you please explain further what you mean when you say it might be a problem with my html association on my machine?-
You need to be a bit more specific to help you:
a) are we talking about windows?
b) if you close all browser windows and put in the poken, does the browser open and will it show the poken homepage or only empty content
c) if you have the browser open and plug in the token, will the already open browser show a new tab with the poken homepage?
What you can try to do, if the browser does not open the html page from the poken device automatically, that you use "file -> open" from the menu and go to the new drive (on your poken).
With association I mean the setting in your (windows?) explorer which directs the management of .html files to the brwoser. This can go wrong in various situations, especially when you uninstall a browser. -

Hi again, Bernd!
Honestly, I don’t know if it’s a Windows problem or what, that’s kind of what I’m trying to find out. I am operating using Windows Vista on a desktop. I have confirmed that the pop-up blocker is disabled.
1. With all my browsers shut down, I put the poken into my usb port. It brings up a Windows Autoplay screen that gives me these options: Always do this for software and games
a. Install or run program:
i. Run Start_Poken.html publisher not specified
If I double-click Run Start_Poken.html, it brings up the following web browser: http://www.goodsearch.com/
b. General Options:
i. Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer
If I double-click on Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer, it brings up MyComputer (the files list). This gives me the following options:
• Autorun
If I click autorun I get a Notepad with this information:
[autorun]
label=Connect to Poken Website
shellexecute=Start_Poken.html
• Help
If I click Help I get a Notepad with this information:
Double-click Start_Poken.html
For help go to http://faq.doyoupoken.com
• Start_Poken
If I click Start_Poken it flashes the words Poken website is loading and then goes to http://www.goodsearch.com/
2. With the browser open first and then plugging in the token, the already open browser does NOT show a new tab with the poken homepage. The system again brings up the same AutoPlay screens and sequences as above.
3. With the Poken homepage open and logged on and then plugging in the token, when I click on the orange “detect” button it starts the circling timer thing. It never seems to stop. For example, I clicked on the “detect” button tonight at 9:40 PM EST. It is still cycling at 10:10 PM EST.
Regarding your comments:
“What you can try to do, if the browser does not open the html page from the poken device automatically, that you use "file -> open" from the menu and go to the new drive (on your poken).”
What menu do you mean? Do you mean go to my file menu? See 1. B. General Options above. Doesn’t work. If this is not the menu you mean, you will need to give me further information.
“With association I mean the setting in your (windows?) explorer which directs the management of .html files to the browser. This can go wrong in various situations, especially when you uninstall a browser”
I have never installed or uninstalled a browser on my system. Internet Explorer is the default on my system, with Yahoo! As my home page / search engine. Where would I go to find the management of .html files, and what would I need to do there?
Thanks for all your help! -

Hi Varina,
Sounds like Goodsearch (http://www.goodsearch.com/) is hijacking your browser, perhaps uninstall it?
However the real problem it seems is that your poken should be detected fine and that it is whirring - try checking that your Java is up to date.
Regards, Tim. -

Hi, Tim!
I checked my Java, and it says I have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 22).
I don't really speak computer very well, can you give me an idea how to uninstall goodsearch? -
-
Hi again, Tim!
YAAAAY! i figured out how to uninstall goodserch, that did it! I am free! I can update my Poken!
Seriously, I'd like to thank all of you who helped me through this. You are all awesome and clever and seriously very helpful, and I commend and thank you! -

I am having the same problem. It keeps telling me to disconnect and reinsert in another usb port.
